Mr. John Mahama, the Vice-President, has inaugurated a new education initiative aimed at ensuring quality basic education for the needy in society.
The 10-year project, dubbed: “Tackling Education Inclusively” (TENI), seeks to improve pupils’ retention, performance and transition from the Primary to Junior High School (JHS) level.
Mr. Mahama disclosed this at Walewale during the inauguration ceremony that the project will cover the Northern sector focusing on three districts in West Mamprusi in the Northern, Talensi-Nabdam in the Upper East and Jirapa in the Upper West Regions.
He urged the people to give attention to the education of their children since the value of education cannot be quantified, adding government has established various social interventions in the education sector such as the provision of free school uniforms and books; increase in the Capitation Grant and incentives for rural teachers.
Mr. Amidu Ibrahim Tanko, the Country Director of the Voluntary Services Overseas Ghana (VSOG), on his part, explained that the first phase of the project, comprising strengthening of community groups to modify socio-cultural practices will cover the period between 2009 and 2013.
He said it will add to teacher availability through placement of 500 National Volunteer teachers and advocacy for effective teacher support and management.
The project is being implemented by VSOG, an international development organization in collaboration with some local partners with support from Comic Relief UK, a charity organization.
